Stock ones have a 43 or 42 stamped on the visible end. This test is only practical on 86 and newer vans as in these the relay/control unit is right there staring at you in the main fuse/relay panel position. If the flashing doesn't quickly stop with the relay suddenly pulled out then that flashing has NOTHING to do with the coolant level warning system. I mean pull it WHILE the flashing is happening, with the key still on and even the engine still running. So if you think the flashing is something to do with the tank sensor and/or level in the tank, PULL the relay/control unit and see if the flashing stops. If you remove the level relay/control unit then the tank level sensor CANNOT trigger the instrument cluster coolant gauge flashing led. Then that relay/control unit has a separate connection to the instrument cluster. Instead the coolant tank level sensor connects to a relay/control unit. There is NO connection from the coolant tank level sensor to the instrument cluster to trigger the led flash.Īgain, NO connection from the tank to the cluster. It seems like I've been over this a thousand times but people still waste time and effort chasing the the wild goose. In basic troubleshooting flow sequencing, you have a sensor indicator alarm. the circuit is just a conductivity test of the coolant so if something is insulating the probe wires it reduces conductivity. polish the electrodes of the sensor with a 3M pad before the test as even a coating of oil, stop leak schmoo, or corrosion can trigger the sensor circuit. if you see the vessel is full and the light comes on, you KNOW it isn't a coolant level issue. Since this sounds repeatable, try observing the level in the pressure vessel and duplicate conditions to make the light come on. Posted: Sat 7:03 pm Post subject: Re: Coolant warning light blinking after warm start Also, since the warning light can be off one minute and then immediately on after killing the engine and restarting, it seems unlikely that the coolant level is the culprit! ![]() It's generally no lower than the top of the return inlet after the engine comes up to temp. Instrument cluster has been in and out a few times this month.Īlso, when I said "min" I guess I meant the level of the main reservoir where the sensor is. Thanks, yea voltage regulator seems like the most likely culprit. ![]() Posted: Sat 6:53 pm Post subject: Re: Coolant warning light blinking after warm start it must be PLUMB FULL.Ħ0% of what you find on the internet is wrong, including this post. check the pressure vessel under the engine lid. The coolant level is well above the min, Īaaaand which tank are you checking the level on? the only one with a 'minimum' is behind the license plate and that is NOT a reliable indicator of how full your system is. Posted: Sat 6:00 pm Post subject: Re: Coolant warning light blinking after warm start ![]() Wondering if the instrument cluster could be the culprit? Any other guesses? Thanks as always for everyone's input. Engine temp stays in the safe range, maybe a little more than half or 2/3 of the way up on the gauge. I tired swapping in a diff coolant sensor to no avail. The coolant level is well above the min, even after the system heats & pressurizes. Sometimes it goes off after a few mins but sometimes stays blinking indefinitely. However, on subsequent starts, when still warm, the light stays blinking. When the van is cold, the coolant warning light blinks for a few seconds after starting and then goes off as it should. Hey y'all, I've got an 87 westy 2.1 all stock that I just started having this issue with.
